Peter James Coleman died peacefully at his home on March 11, 2026, surrounded by three of his children.

Peter was born in Morris, Minnesota, in 1941 to Dorothy and Peter Coleman, the oldest of six children. After moving to Tacoma, WA, his young parents started a bakery where Peter worked throughout his teenage years, paying his way through college and medical school. While in medical school, he met the love of his life, Sue Manussier, and they married in 1968. Before their marriage, they placed their first child, Susan, for adoption. When she turned 21, they reconnected and maintained a relationship with her until the end of their lives.

During the Vietnam War, Peter and Sue moved to Taiwan, where their first son was born while Peter served at an Air Force base. Two years later, they returned to Baltimore, MD, where Peter began his residency in Child Psychiatry. There, he and Sue brought two daughters and another son into the world. The family remained in Baltimore for 17 years, where Peter served as Medical Director of the North Baltimore Center and maintained a private practice in Child Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis.

In 1988, the family moved to Upperco, MD, where Peter bought his wife her much-loved hobby farm, complete with goats and alpacas. Peter continued his work as medical director at Woodbourne Residential Treatment Center and Board of Childcare, both inpatient residential facilities for troubled youth, while maintaining his private practice with adults and children. A true DIY-er, his weekends and summers were spent tending to the many projects an old farmhouse requires and mending pasture fences.

Peter lost his beloved wife in 2004 and remained faithful to her memory for the rest of his life. It was for her that he made the cinnamon rolls of his youth and tended her garden and yard, creating a beautiful respite from the city where two of his daughters would eventually marry. For the last four years of his life, Peter lived in Rumney, New Hampshire, to be close to his youngest child, Robin, spending time with his grandchildren and his dog Maya.

Peter is survived by the four children he and Sue loved, raised, and supported: Steven Coleman (Alex Coleman), Karen Coleman (Rafael Narvaez), Thomas Coleman, and Robin Goldstein (David Goldstein). He is also survived by Susan Davis-Brown and fifteen grandchildren.

Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
