Phyllis L. McKernan 95, of Goffstown, NH, passed away peacefully at the Hillsborough County Nursing Home on November 26, 2014. On the same day, 37 years ago, her beloved husband and best friend Alan C. McKernan passed away. Phyllis and Alan were married from 1946 until Alan's death in 1977.
Phyllis graduated from Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing in 1940 and worked as a registered nurse for many years. She was a highly skilled nurse and administrator and was one of the first women licensed as a nursing home administrator in NH. She served as the Director of the Bel-Air Nursing Home in Goffstown where she mentored many area youth who later chose nursing as a profession. Phyllis completed her nursing career as an RN on unit B2 at Hillsborough County Nursing Home, where 20 years later she is still remembered by staff for her competence, compassion, and friendship.
She is survived by her five children, Joan Buckley of Goffstown, Patrick McKernan of Goffstown, Douglas McKernan of Bow, Laurel McKernan of Lebanon, and Kathleen McKernan of Manchester, 11 surviving grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her siblings Bernice Randall, John LaValley, and Patricia LaValley, and grandson Nicholas Braley.
Phyllis was known for her kind and generous nature and her love of family and friends. She was an avid card player â Phyllis and Alan participated in the Goffstown Bridge Club for many years. She was smart and funny, surprising others with her quick wit right up to her final days. She loved to socialize, meet new people and see new places. Phyllis' greatest enjoyment in life was raising her children and spending time with her family. Her legacy to her family was her positive outlook, kindness, and always seeing the best in people.
