Rawland E. Dore, 89, of Alton, passed away suddenly at his home early Monday morning, February 14th.
Rawland was born in Alton on Oct. 07, 1921, one of seven children of Leon and Doris (Hale) Dore. He was a lifelong resident of Alton. He graduated from Alton High School, and was very athletic. He won several medals in cross-country ski meets all over the state, and was also on the varsity basketball team 1st string throughout his four years of high school. Upon graduation from high school he was employed at the Globe Manufacturing Company in Pittsfield until he joined the Army Air Force to support the war effort.
Rawland was a past commander of the Claude R. Batcheldor American Legion Post 72. He was also a member of the Alton Volunteer Fire Department for 34 years and served as their treasurer for most of those years. He was coach of the Alton Little League in 1965 when the team won the Belknap Sunset League Championship. Rawland retired from Pease AFB where, during his tenure, he received several awards and citations from the Air Force Logistics Department. After retirement he enjoyed downhill skiing at Gunstock well into his 80s.
Rawland is survived by his wife Virginia (Kidder) of 67 years; 2 sons, Dennis and his wife Carol of Minnesota, and Douglas and his wife Cynthia of Alton Bay; sister Joyce Peverly of Laconia; grandson Aaron of Alton; two granddaughters, Sara and her husband Jonah Pike of Meredith, and Michelle and her husband Ryan Dearing of Nebraska; great-grandsons Caden, Carter, and Cameron of Alton; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Alton Riverside Cemetery.
