Raymond “Ray” John Roberts, 91, of Boscawen, NH, passed peacefully on Sunday, March 3, 2024, following a period of declining health. Ray was born in Burlington, VT, August 24, 1932. He was the son of Roland and Margaret Roberts of NH, brother of Roland Roberts (Mary-Jean) of NY, Richard Roberts (Neva) of FL, Gretchen Hudson (James), of VT, and Mary Healy, of NH.

Surviving family members include his beloved wife of 67 years, Carmel (Pinsonneault), daughters, Susan Barr (Richard) and Lisa Therrien (John), daughter-in-law, Lori Tenhave (John), and son, Paul (Sarah), eight grandchildren, Benjamin, Audrey, Christopher, Tommy, Jocelyn, Alyson, Jacob and Amelia, five great-grandchildren, Piper, Remington, Sloane, Hailey, and Hannah, a brother, Richard, and several nieces and nephews.

Ray was predeceased by his parents, Roland and Margaret Roberts, brother, Roland Roberts, sisters, Gretchen Hudson and Mary Healy, and son, Thomas Roberts.

Ray attended Manchester, NH schools and graduated from West High School - Class of 1950 and completed college courses at Saint Anselm College, Goffstown, NH.

Ray was a longtime resident of NH, having lived for many years in Merrimack and Manchester, and more recently in Allenstown, Penacook, and Boscawen.

Ray was a hard worker and proud to claim the titles of United States Marine and Veteran, having honorably served three years in the USMC, followed by 38 years in the NH Army National Guard, retiring in 1987 as a First Sergeant. As a dedicated member of the NH law enforcement community, Ray was a Special Patrolman for the Bedford Police Department from 1967-86, and as a Deputy Sheriff with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department from 1986-2007. Ray was also a supporter of The Hundred Club of NH.

Ray’s varied interests included hunting, fishing, candlepin bowling, auto mechanics, motorcycle riding, jogging, and skiing. He welcomed a good conversation and a friendly game of cribbage. Ray dedicated himself to his family and friends, and his caring and nurturing way was evident to all. He volunteered with the NH Special Olympics and Meals on Wheels for several years and was grateful for the opportunity in helping bring joy to others.

Anyone who knew Ray discovered he had a passion for golf. At a young age he shagged balls and learned to caddy at the Manchester County Club in Bedford. Ray would eventually become a long-time member of Intervale Country Club, Manchester Country Club, and most recently Canterbury Woods Country Club. Additionally, much of Ray’s free time was shared with several NH golf associations including the McDonough Scholarship Foundation, the NHGA Slope Committee, and the Profile Seniors Golfers’ Association. For the better part of 80 years, Ray’s involvement with golf allowed him to share and enjoy countless fond memories and lifelong friendships.

The Roberts family would extend its heartfelt thanks to the staff at both John H. Whittaker Place Assisted Care Community, Penacook, NH and the Merrimack County Nursing Home, Boscawen, NH for their thoughtful caretaking.

In lieu of flowers, Ray’s family respectfully asks for any donations be made to the following: the McDonough Scholarship Foundation, NH Special Olympics, Meals on Wheels, or to a charity close to your heart.

There will be no calling hours. A family service will be held at a later date at The New Hampshire State Veteran’s Cemetery, Boscawen, NH.
