Raymond W. Weeks

WAKEFIELD —Raymond W. Weeks, born in East Wakefield, N.H., on Sept. 29, 1917, passed away on Sept. 18, 2007, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester at the age of 89. The son of Arthur A. Weeks and Marion (Wallace) Weeks of Portsmouth, he grew up in Portsmouth and attended Portsmouth High School, graduating in 1936. He was a long-time resident of Brookfield. Mr. Weeks entered the U.S. Army in 1941, retiring in 1961 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was a tank commander in World War II and fought in five European campaigns, receiving two Silver Stars, a Bronze Star, and two Purple Hearts. While serving in the Korean War as a Corps Armor officer during two campaigns, he received a Presidential unit Citation, the Korean Presidential Citation and the Commendation Ribbon. A graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College in 1955, he served for three years at the Pentagon. His last station before retirement was in Lisbon, Portugal, as the executive officer of the US MAAG. Retiring to New Hampshire in 1961, he worked for 10 years for the State of New Hampshire, retiring in 1975 as director of Unemployment Compensation. He spent his retirement years raising, buying and selling Hereford cattle, horses and other farm animals. Active in local affairs, he was moderator for the Town of Brookfield for many years and a member of the original building committee for the Governor Wentworth School. A member of the First Congregational Church of Wakefield, he served for several years as its treasurer. He was predeceased by his wife Dolores Weeks and his daughter, Jennifer Weeks. He is survived by his son, Nathan O. Weeks of Dover; four grandchildren, Kagen, Hillary and Andrew Weeks, and Stephanie Doyle. Other family members include two brothers, Donald Weeks of Portsmouth and Robert Weeks of Denver, and a sister, Dorothy Lyczak of Rye, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. At his request, there will be no visiting hours. Funeral services and burial will be private. Burial will be at the Pine River (Mathews) Cemetery in North Wakefield. Donations in his memory to the Gafney Library in Wakefield in lieu of flowers would be graciously accepted.
