Richard "Dick" Martin Crowley, Sr. passed away on July 25, 2025 in Dover, New Hampshire after a short illness.
Dick was born on April 24, 1934, in Haverhill, Massachusetts to Helen (Flanagan) and John Frederick Crowley. He was raised in both Somersworth and Portsmouth by his mother’s cousin, Margaret (Flanagan) and her husband, Paul Regan.
Dick graduated Portsmouth High School in 1952 after earning many accolades as a sprinter and captain of the track team. He immediately entered the apprentice program at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he later served as both a leadman shipfitter in Shop 11 and a scheduler, before retiring in 1986. That same year, he also entered the National Guard, originally serving in Newcastle and later in Somersworth.
In 1952, Dick married Geraldine M. Pennington of Kittery, Maine. Ten years later, they moved their family from Portsmouth to Drew Road in Somersworth, where he resided until a couple of months prior to his death.
Dick was a fan of New England sports teams, the Red Sox, the Patriots, and especially the Celtics, as well as the U.S. Olympic teams. He was an avid fisherman, a keen photographer, and a great lover of all types of music; journeying to the jazz and folk festivals in Newport, Rhode Island and later to his much-beloved New Orleans.
Dick was a great believer in civil rights and therefore a lifelong Democrat; he abhorred the degradation of American politics that has resulted in the current administration.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Gerry, who passed away in 2013. He is survived by his son Ric Crowley of Rochester; son Ron and wife Jan Crowley of Dover; daughter Kathy and husband Tom Carroll of Rollinsford; and daughter Carolyn and husband Chris Whalen of Madbury; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Assisting the family with arrangements is the Cremation Society of NH, Hampton. To view Richard's Online Tribute, send condolences to the family, or for more information, visit www.csnh.com.
