Richard Barclay Dugger

Richard Barclay Dugger (“Dick”), 92 of Keene, died March 17th with his wife by his side.

Born in Philadelphia November 27, 1932, the son of Dr. John H. and Marjorie B. Dugger. He graduated from Germantown Friends School in 1951 then Hobart William Smith College in 1955 with a BA in Economics. Following college, he was drafted and served three years as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant. In 1959 he started in The Philadelphia National Bank training program. On May 16, 1959, he married Patricia Ann Cooke, their son Barclay was born in 1960 and daughter Ann in 1963. In 1969 they moved their family to Keene, where Dick spent the rest of his career in banking starting with Ashuelot National Bank, Indian Head Bank and Fleet Bank retiring in 1990.

Dick was an active member of the community serving in many capacities including President of the Keene Regional Industrial Foundation; Director of the Keene Industrial Development Corp; Town of Swanzey Zoning Board; Director of the Keene Clinic; President of the Monadnock United Way; Trustee, Treasurer and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Cheshire Medical Center and Cheshire Health Foundation; Treasurer of the Town of Westmoreland; Board of Governors of New Hampshire Public Television; Vestry of St. James Episcopal Church; Board of Trustees of the Historical Society of Cheshire County, Kingsbury Fund and RiverMead.

He served as President of the New Hampshire Bankers Association and served on the American Bankers Association Leadership Council and Government Relations Council.

Besides his family his many interests included skiing and golf. He was a long-time member of the Keene Country Club and President of the New Hampshire Senior Golfer’s Association. He held a High-Power Rifle Expert certification with the NRA.

He never forgot all the wonderful people he encountered following the family’s move to Keene. There was something special about the Keene area with its welcoming residents that makes it such an enjoyable place to live.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years Pat; son Barclay and wife Signe of Belchertown, MA; daughter Ann Cook and husband David of Saco, ME; grandchildren Jonathan Cook and his wife Kara, Amanda Brandt and her husband Karlsen, Sonia Dugger and Brody Dugger; brother John and his wife Phyliss Dugger of Tucson, AZ. He was predeceased by his sisters Lindy in 1958 and Phyllis Buchanan in 2019.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 5th at 2 pm at Covenant Living, 95 Wyman Road, Keene. Burial will be private at the South Village Cemetery, Westmoreland. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made in his memory to the Historical Society of Cheshire County, PO Box 803, Keene, NH 03431.
