Richard Stanley Moulton, Sr., 82, of Tilton, died May 8, 2000 at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Franklin. He was born in Meredith on July 29, 1917, the son of George Leroy and Hazel (Nickles) Moulton. As a student at Meredith High School, he participated in baseball, but caring for his neighbor's sled dogs started him on a lifelong career of handling, training and racing sled dogs. As a teenager, he worked at the Chinook Kennels, headquarters for a goverment-sponsored Antarctica Expedition. Richard served as senior dog driver on Admiral Richard E. Byrd's expedition to Antarctica from 1939 to 1941. Immediately on his return from the Antarctic, he enlisted in the US Army where he was a wartime dog driver. He became Master Sergeant of the Sled Dog Ambulance Corps that reached from the Arctic region Labrador and Europe. He was presented with the Bronze Star and the Congressional Medal of Honor. Following World War II, he was a lumber man for most of his life in Wonalancet. He continued to follow his lifelong pursuit of the outdoors. Racing sled dogs during his youth, he returned to racing in the mid 1950's throughout New England, the Midwest, Alaska and Canada. He captured the World Championship five times in Laconia before retiring from the sport in the late 1980's. For the next ten years, he lived in Holderness where he retired from logging in the early 1990's. Since October of 1999, he resided at the Veterans Home in Tilton. Family members include two daughters, Marlee Prater of Linden, MI and Sharlene D. Moulton of Charleston, SC; a son, Richard S. Moulton, Jr. of Glen; a grandson, William W. Duprey of Charleston, SC; a sister Beverly Smith of Holderness; two brothers, Clayton Moulton of Gilford and Kendall Mouton of Kennebunkport, ME; three grandchildren and one great grandchild by marriage and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Edward Moulton and Leroy Moulton and by his wife, Maxine C. (Tagart) Moulton. There will be a celebration of Richard's life on Wednesday May 17 at 1:00 at the VFW, 143 Court St., Laconia, NH. In lieu of flowers, a perpetual trophy will be established in his name.
