Robert Moore Alley

Robert M. Alley died in the Lakes Region General Hospital on March 27, 2001. He was born in Portland, Maine, the son of Harriet and Charles Alley. Mr. Alley worked with the US Corps of Engineers in 1938 on the construction of the Franklin, N.H. Flood Control Dam. He served in the US Army during World War II, and later attended Boston University , being elected to the Phi Beta Kappa society. Mr. Alley taught English and Humanities at Laconia High School for 30 years. He was revered by students and colleagues alike as a gifted teacher. He and a colleague developed a nationally acclaimed Humanities program which involved students in a project whose goal was to design a Utopian society. He is survived by his loving wife, Judith, a stepdaughter, Gretchen Seifert, and a nephew and his wife, Amos and Kathleen Alley. A memorial service will be held later in the spring. In his memory, donations may be made to the Laconia High School Scholarship Fund, Laconia, New Hampshire
