Robert J. Bullock, a long time public servant of Bedford, has passed away at the age of 93.
Born August 9, 1922, Mr. Bullock attended local schools and graduated from Manchester High School West. After High School he enlisted in the U.S. Navy (1941) seeing action in the Pacific Theater and retiring from the United States Navy Reserves in 1966.
He was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Manchester Chapter of the American Red Cross, a long-time member/treasurer of the Manchester Exchange Club, Past Elder of the Bedford Presbyterian Church and a nearly 70 year member of the Masons (Lafayette Lodge No. 41).
Mr. Bullock started his career of service to the Town of Bedford in the early 1950's as a member of the Board of Adjustment/Zoning Board. Over the next nearly five decades he served in many capacities and offices, both appointed and elected such as Assistant Director of Civil Defense and then serving as Director, he also served as a Trustee of the Cemeteries, a Trustee of the Trust Funds, Assistant School and Town Moderator under three different Moderators, a Supervisor of the Checklist and was appointed to many study committees. Mr. Bullock also served for over thirty-five years as a member of the Bedford Fire Department retiring with the rank of Captain. He also served as a Deputy Fire Forest Warden. Also, he enjoyed a relationship of over thirty years with the Bedford Police Department and the Merrimack District Court as a Bail Commissioner prior to his retirement. In his later years he enjoyed his relationship with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department as a Deputy Sheriff.
In 1946 he married the love of his life Eleanor (Strobel) Bullock with whom he would have celebrated seventy years of marriage on July 29, 2016. April 15th would have been the seventy-ninth anniversary of their first date. Along with Mrs. Bullock he enjoyed a career in Real Estate and construction that spanned many decades.
Mr. Bullock is survived by his loving spouse of sixty-nine years Eleanor Strobel Bullock, his son Ryk-Robert Bullock of Bedford and a much loved grandson Todd also of Bedford.
Always a gentleman with rarely a bad word about anyone, he accomplished much in his lifetime. He was proud of his family, his service to his country and community. His attitude was so positive, that it enabled him to say he was a thirty-five year cancer survivor even though his 1981 diagnosis was called terminal.
In light of Mr. Bullock's long association with the Bedford Fire Department, the Bedford Police Department and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department, the family respectfully suggests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to The Hundred Club of NH, Inc. c/o Nancy Keller, P.O. Box 23, Manchester, N.H. 03105 or alternatively to a charity of one's choice.
The family would also like to acknowledge the kindnesses of Claudette Prive, Richard Barrett, Jessica Galloway, David Martineau, Jeffrey Hardwick, Kyle Veillette and most especially his "little buddy" Conor Barrett all of whom provided him with visits and assistance in transportation and running errands.
SERVICES: A Masonic Service will be held at the Cremation Society of NH, 243 Hanover St., Manchester on Thursday, April 7, 2016 from 3:30 to 4:00 with a memorial gathering to follow from 4-7 P.M. Details of the Committal Services will be announced at a later date.
