ROBERT W. GEFVERT
WWII pilot Robert W. Gefvert made his final takeoff from Berlin, VT on March 7, 2015. The Duluth, MN native arrived early (as was his habit) for the 69th anniversary of his March 9 wedding to Jane (Vivian) (d. 9/11/2010). He was born December 30, 1922 to Benjamin and Anna (Redmayne) Gefvert. Throughout his long life he kept an endearing playfulness and sense of appreciation. He was often heard to remark, "I've had a wonderful life."
From childhood, Bob was fascinated with flight, and he fulfilled his dream of piloting aircraft through the Army Air Corps. His relationship with Jane, also a Duluth native and a WAVE, was solidified during WWII. Following discharge from the service, he earned a degree at the University of Minnesota. Then, the couple raised four children as they moved between Duluth and Minneapolis; and on to Dearborn, MI; Mount Prospect, IL; Andover, MA; and Hillsboro, NH. Wherever he lived he had fruit trees in the yard.
Bob loved nature and the outdoors. One of his joys was introducing others to canoeing and fishing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota.
His career was in the footwear business; he retired in 1987 as Director of Sales Training for Converse. He participated in many civic and charitable organizations, including Boy Scouts (he was especially proud of his two Eagle Scout sons), the Masonic order, and the American Legion; he played trumpet in the Shriners band, and at memorial services for veterans through Legion Post 59 in Hillsboro, NH.
Bob is lovingly remembered by his children Bruce, Roger, Cynthia (Paul McGinnes), and Barba-ra (John Gramuglia); sister-in-law Josephine Vivian; four nephews, two nieces, and many dear friends. While he suffered memory loss in his later years, he clearly recalled friends, family, and his home state, and routinely reminded his children that he loved them and was proud of them. Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Donald Richard Gefvert.
Bob's family is deeply grateful for the care and support of both friends and professionals, which brought our dad opportunity and joy.
SERVICES -- A celebration of Bob's life will be held Sunday, June 7 at the American Legion (Hillsboro, NH) followed by interment at 10:00 AM Monday, June 8 at New Hampshire State Veterans' Cemetery (Boscawen, NH)--and later at Forest Hill Cemetery (Duluth, MN).
Memorial contributions are welcomed for Shriners Hospital for Children (Minneapolis, MN), American Legion Post 59 (Hillsboro, NH), Mayo Healthcare (Northfield, VT) or the organization of your choice. Family will match donations made to the Hillsboro Legion (where Bob was an active member for many years) and to Mayo (which provided Bob with extraordinary caring support in late life).
