Lt. Col. Robert G. Horne, US Army (retired), died Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at his home in Newport NH, at the age of 74. He was born in Dover, NH on May 2, 1929, the son of Burton P. and Loretta M. (Roxie Varney) Horne of Exeter, NH. He graduated from Exeter High School and enlisted in the United States Army in 1948. He served his country in the Korean War and Viet Nam War. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and the Air Medal along with several other merit awards during his 20 years of military service. He retired from the military in 1968 and attended the University of New Hampshire where he graduated with a Batchelder Degree in Business Management. In the early 1970's he moved his family to his farm on North Main Street, in Newport, NH and became the eighth Town Manager of Newport from 1970-72. He then accepted a position as Town Manager of Woodstock, Vermont. In 1984, he returned to Newport as the twelfth Town Manager from 1984-87. During his tenure in Newport he also served as tax collector, health officer, building inspector, and welfare director and was instrumental in the development of the Sewer Treatment Plant. His passions included flower and vegetable gardening and he worked endlessly to prepare his fields for planting asparagus and strawberries for a roadside stand. He also raised pigs, chickens, sheep and other livestock. He is survived by his first wife, Camellia Iris Horne of Rollinsford, NH; their eight children and spouses, J. William Horne of Oak Grove, MN, Deborah and Paul Chase of Wells, ME, Randolph and Kerri Horne of Lebanon, NH, Robert H. Horne of South Berwick, ME, Diane Horne of Somersworth, NH, Marianne Horne of Somersworth, NH, Cindy and Mark Osborne of Springfield, VT and Teresa Horne of Eliot, ME; 19 grandchildren; 2 great grand children; one brother, Burton R. Horne of Myrtle Beach, SC; two sisters, Nancy Jackson of North Hampton, NH and Roberta (Bobette) Keeney of Exeter, NH; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his second wife, Barbara Kimball of Charlestown, NH. He will be remembered in a mass at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Newport, NH at the end of January. A private memorial service will take place this spring in North Newport, NH at the Corbin Covered Bridge Park where the Robert G. Horne memorial bench is located.
