Robert William Madigan of Hudson, NH passed away on November 7, 2015 at the age of 87. He was born in Nashua in 1928 and was the son of Francis Madigan and Mary Gordon Madigan.
He is survived by his children: Richard Madigan and Randi Madigan. He is also survived by his stepchildren: Gordon Tate Jr., Roger Tate, Steven Tate, Norman Tate, Linda Kierstead, and Maritza Clay. He is predeceased by his first wife Frances Mozeika Madigan and his second wife Dorothy Beaubien Madigan and two step children Rodney Tate and Susan Tate.
Robert is also survived by his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Robert's siblings include John Madigan, Edward Madigan, Catherine McCartney and Eileen Stewart. He is predeceased by his older brother Frances Madigan, Jr.
Robert was employed by W.R. Grace in Nashua for almost 30 years and was a member of the International Chemical Workers Union until his retirement. After his retirement, he continued to work for many years as a delivery driver for auto parts stores.
Robert enjoyed travelling whether it was a trip to attend a VFW Convention in another state or it was a drive to the beach to enjoy seafood. He lived independently at his home until a recent fall and subsequent illness required him to need assistance.
Robert served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force and is a World War II and Korean War veteran. He has served overseas as well as locally and is proud to have been posted at the Charlestown Navy Yard and to have worked on board the U.S.S. Constitution.
The highlight of Robert's life was his membership in and service to the VFW. As a member of the VFW for decades, Robert held many positions including those on the local, state, and national level. He has had many appointments to national committees. Among his positions, he has served as National Council Member District #1, State Commander, State Judge Advocate, and Commander of Post #483 Nashua. He was a strong advocate for the creation of the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
A graveside service has been arranged by the Cremation Society of NH and will take place at the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen on Wednesday, November 18 at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, there will be a luncheon at the Merrimack VFW Post #8641 sponsored by the VFW and Auxiliary members of posts #483 and #8641. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the NH State Veterans Cemetery, PO Box 626, Concord, NH 03302.
