Robert Smith

Robert P. Smith, age 83, of Vero Beach, FL and Bristol, NH passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 10, 2022.

Bob was born on July 2, 1939, in Somerville, MA to John F. and Evelyn C. (Tobin) Smith. He graduated from Somerville High School and attended Northeastern University.  He proudly served in the Army National Guard. Bob worked at IBM for 30 years, retiring in 1992.

During his 30 years of retirement, he held many enjoyable part-time jobs including working at Disney World, LA Dodgers spring training, a fishing charter company, the Vero Beach Museum of Art, and various state parks across the country. To the delight of his grandchildren, Bob had a golf cart at Elm Brook State Park and the key to the candy store at Ellacoya State Park. Bob’s last job was as a ‘pool boy’ at The Bluffs at age 80.  He also kept himself busy volunteering at the Environmental Learning Center in Indian River County, at Indian River Hospital, on the board of directors for several homeowner’s associations, and on activities committees including at The Bluffs at Danforth Bay.

Bob grew up and raised his family in Massachusetts, spending a brief time in Colorado, then settling in New Hampshire until retirement. He has resided in Vero Beach, FL, summering in New Hampshire near family, for the past 20+ years.

Bob is predeceased by his parents and his brother, John Smith.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Janice (Griffin) Smith; his son, Brian Robert Smith and his wife, Jennie; his three daughters, Gerri Goguen and her husband, Mike, Deb Hillson and her husband, Chuck, and Barby Doyle and her husband, John; his sister, Dianne Rollins and her husband, Joe. Bob is the proud grandfather of Jeffrey and Jason Levesque, Kevin St. Gelais and Sarah Gustafson, Kayla Wolf and Kristen Hillson, and Patrick and Ryan Doyle. Endless joy was brought to him by his 2 great grandchildren, Bentley and Juliana.  He is also survived by brothers/sisters-in-law, Millie Smith, Marsha and George Doucette, and Bob and Roxanne Griffin, and many nieces and nephews.

Bob was an avid camper, spending several years traveling full time around the country in early retirement, and at the Bluffs in Freedom, NH for 15 summers. He and Janice traveled to more than a dozen countries and visited all 50 United States. He also enjoyed walking, reading, biking, boating, playing cards, doing puzzles and coin collecting over the years. Bob bought and sold more cars, trucks and campers than can be remembered. He was an early riser and enjoyed going out to breakfast with his son.  Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.

The family is hosting a celebration of life on Saturday, September 17, 2022, from 12:00 to 3:00pm. Please join us at Granite Tapas & Cocktail Lounge located at 1461 Hooksett Rd. #6, Hooksett, NH 03106.
