Rosalind Sutton Oesterle was an accomplished artist and an animal lover. She was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend and lived a long and wonderful life. She passed away peacefully on October 14, 2026 at Benchmark at Haverhill Crossings where she was lovingly cared for by the attentive staff and her family.

Rosalind was born on October 23, 1937, the first daughter of Marjorie and Frederic E. Sutton. “Linda,” as her family called her, and her younger sister Ann, were raised in Verona, NJ. Roz graduated from Skidmore College with a Bachelor of Science in Art in 1959, and continued her education at Columbia University and later with esteemed painters including Ed Whitney. She met and married her husband James in 1962 when living in Manhattan and working for photographer Mark Shaw. Roz and Jim travelled throughout Europe and lived in San Francisco, Sausalito, Middleburg, VA and again briefly in Manhattan before settling in Armonk, NY in 1972 and welcoming their daughter, Allison.

Rosalind became a well-known presence in the Armonk, New York and Northeast regional artist community, leaving behind a legacy of beauty, creativity, and devotion to her craft. She and Jim enjoyed exhibiting in juried art shows in Armonk, NY, Wickford, RI, Portland, ME, Glastonbury, Mystic, and Greenwich, CT, and others around New England. Roz, Jim, and Allison loved spending time with fellow artists. Roz was a proud Signature Member of The American Watercolor Society and received many awards for her work. While she was widely celebrated for her mastery of florals and landscapes, her later artwork evolved to focus on captivating abstracts. Her diverse portfolio brought warmth, color, and elegance into several galleries and many collections, both private and corporate. Her career began at the Armonk Outdoor Art Show in 1972, where she continued to exhibit her work for 50 years.

Roz and Jim built a rustic home in Craftsbury, VT with dear friends in the early 70’s. They spent many summers vacationing there with Allison, cultivating flower and vegetable gardens, and sharing time with family and friends.

After Allison was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age two, Roz and Jim became tireless advocates for her and for Type I Diabetes research. They helped to raise awareness and funding for The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (now renamed Breakthrough T1D) and later for the Barton Center for Diabetes Education in North Oxford, MA through the Armonk Lions Club.

Beyond painting, Roz was a gifted piano player and could be heard playing every day in her home. She kept a beautiful garden and loved flowers. She had a profound love for animals. Roz and Jim’s home and yard were a sanctuary surrounded by the warmth of beloved pets and wild animals, and in her later years, she found immense peace and joy in watching and enjoying birds at the feeders outside her windows.

Rosalind cherished her family. She shared 64 years of marriage with her devoted husband, James. She was the proud mother of their only daughter, Allison, and mother-in-law to Allison's partner, Gaylen McCann, of Amesbury, Massachusetts. Roz is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Greg Kahn, as well as three nieces, Carolyn Kahn Konigsberg (Harvey), Leslie Kahn Margaritondo (Anthony) and Suzanne Kahn (Steve Gauthier) as well as her great niece, Ashley Margaritondo (David Haberman) and great nephew, Ben Margaritondo with whom she treasured spending holidays and creating lasting memories. Rosalind’s memory lives on through her family, her friends, and the light captured in her timeless artwork.

Rosalind’s family is grateful for the wonderful care she received through Beacon Hospice and Benchmark at Haverhill Crossings.

Donations may be made in Rosalind’s name to the SPCA in Westchester County, NY, The Barton Center for Diabetes Education, Inc. and the American Cancer Society.

A small service will occur in the spring near the family’s home in Armonk.
