Roy E. Byrd

Roy E. Byrd, Jr. 69, of 7 Seyah Road, passed away February 17, 2003. Mr. Byrd was born May 5, 1933 in Roanoke, Virginia. He was the son of the late Roy and Elsie (Obenshain) Byrd. He was a proud US Army Korean War Veteran who served at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea where he was awarded a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf cluster; he was then stationed at Camp Dodge, New Hampshire. After his discharge in 1953 he made the North Country his home, retiring from Crown Vantage Paper Company after 44 years of service. He worked part-time for many years at the Mt. Washington Auto Road as a stagedriver. He enjoyed telling his passengers all about the history of the Auto Road. His passions in life were country music (Hank Williams Sr. and Dick Curless), and automobiles, especially his antique Buicks that he had painstakingly restored to original condition. Beloved husband of Betsy (Sherburne) Byrd for 49 years. Loving father of Kathryn Byrd and husband Jack Pierce of Citrus Heights, CA; son Jarrod Byrd and Jennifer Spaulding, grandchildren Shelby and Tristan Byrd all of Gorham, NH; his loving sister Joanne and husband Sidney Snead of Roanoke, VA; his sister-in-law, Carole Harris, Lee, NH. He also leaves his pet Shih Tzu, Trilby, his constant companion who will dearly miss him. Many caring aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews survive him. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 8th, 11 a.m., at Holy Family Church in Gorham. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Roy's memory to Country Village Center, P.O. Box 441, Lancaster, NH 03584. Burial will take place in late spring at Wheeler Cemetery, Shelburne, NH.
