Russell E. Cole, 90 of Loudon, NH died at his home on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014.
Born on Oct. 21, 1923 in Manchester, CT., he grew up playing ball, fishing, picking tobacco and strawberries during the summer. Russ served in the US Army in Europe during World War II. After returning home he received a bachelor's degree in economics from Wesleyan University. Russ worked in the insurance industry throughout his career living in Wilton, CT with his wife, Nancy, on land which was once part of the family farmstead. Russ was active in maintaining the Hurlbutt Street School, a one room schoolhouse where his wife had attended. Russ was happy building stone walls, mowing the lawn, digging the garden or watching sports. He was an avid tennis player as long as his knees held out. After moving to NH in recent years, Russ lived in a family setting at Canterbury Hall in Canterbury, and then moved next door to his son where he had the finest care and company of caregiver Sarah Young and her family. He was pleased to have family nearby at all times.
He left his son, Douglas Cole and wife Jane Iarussi of Loudon, his grandsons Charles and wife Lyndsey of Concord, Tyler and fiancé Tara Holmes of Jersey City, NJ, Whittaker (Tucker) of Loudon, his granddaughter Kendall of Loudon; and his brother Alan, and his wife Tyra of Somers, NY.
He was predeceased by his wife Nancy, and his brothers, Mervin "Ward" and Randall.
Private memorial services for Russ and wife Nancy will be held in CT. In lieu of flowers, donations in Russ's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital www.stjude.org.
