Sandra Mae MacDonald Bowers (Sandy) passed away at home, after bravely fighting multiple health issues, listening to her favorite Broadway musicals, and supported by her family and dear friends.
Sandy was born and raised in Everett, MA, the oldest daughter of Jesse and Norman MacDonald. After graduating from Everett High School, she worked for the phone company before becoming a stay-at-home mom, teaching her kids strength, courage, kindness, and a love of the arts.
Sandy was an adventurer and as tough as they come. She moved to England, due to her husband's job, with an 18-month-old and 6 months pregnant. There she navigated life, gave birth, and took living abroad in stride. And a year later, a move to Switzerland, where, even not knowing or speaking the language, could keep her from enjoying the adventure. Sandy loved to share stories about her time abroad.
Ultimately, landing in Laguna Niguel, CA, Sandy was the epitome of a stay home mom, joining local and school organizations, supporting and shuttling Tracy and Todd to sports, dance classes and drama performances, and was the most dedicated cheerleader. Always the mom with the open door and the homemade cookies, she treated her kids' friends as her own, creating a home full of laughter and love. She had a tight knit group of girlfriends and took adult jazz and tap classes for many years, performing in yearly recitals. Sandy was an excellent cook and an avid sewer, knitter/crocheter, and crafter. She made everything from clothes and play costumes, to prom dresses, and yearly Christmas ornaments. One of her favorite things, was teaching her granddaughter, Darby, all her tricks of the trades.
In 1990, she returned to MA and took on a new adventure as an executive secretary, with top level security, for Raytheon for the next 18 years. She and her sister, Laurie, lived together as the real-life Oscar (Laurie) and Felix (Sandy) for the next 30 years, ultimately moving to Epping, NH to be close to their kids and grandchildren.
After moving east, Sandy spent her summers at Hedding Campground. She and Laurie's cottage was well known among the Hedding kids for its never-ending supply of popsicles and ice cream bars for the grandkids and their friends to grab on their way by. She made many friends, was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, and enjoyed having lunch and playing Canasta with her friends. Sandy’s crocheted kitchen towels were always a big hit at the yearly Hedding Street Fair.
Sandy suffered from some health issues the last few years, and lost her sister in 2021, but she was a "tough broad", a fighter and never lost her sense of humor. Known these days to everyone as "Meem", she immensely enjoyed her time with her family, friends, grandkids, and great grandkids.
Sandy is predeceased by her parents, sister, Laurie and brother, David. She is survived by her daughter, Tracy (Tom) Dwyer; and son, Todd Bowers; grandchildren, Jake (Sammi) Holmes, Shannon (Adam) Anderson, Tommy Dwyer III, Darby (William) Van De Veen, Brady Dwyer; and great grandchildren, Kinsley and Mackenzie Holmes and Fenrir Anderson; as well as nieces, nephews, and many close friends, whom she considered family.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hedding Day Camp, PO Box 433, Epping, NH 03042. A Celebration of Life will be held at her beloved Hedding next summer. Assisting the family with arrangements is the Cremation Society of NH, Hampton. To view Sandy's Online Tribute, send condolences to the family, or for more information, visit www.csnh.com.
