Born in Lubec, Maine, Sandy and his family moved to Londonderry, NH, where he attended Pinkerton Academy, where he was a varsity pitcher for the baseball team and performed in several stage shows. Sandy then attended UNH and entered Army ROTC, being stationed in Baltimore, MD, after graduation in 1958. He would retire from the military at the rank of Lt. Colonel after 36 years of service to the country.

In 1956, he married his high school sweetheart from Milford High, Marcia Clark. They welcomed a baby girl in 1959 and were married 21 years, before Marcia passed away. Sandy remarried—Mary Ann Lippincott—and adopted her beautiful six-year-old daughter, Courtney. Moving to CT, Sandy started a successful manufacturer’s rep business for specialty metals at the age of 50. He enjoyed volunteering at his local church, and eventually retired to Lynchburg, VA, once Courteny entered college. In 2011, Sandy returned to NH, where he re-connected and spent time with his dear companion Susan, exploring the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, skipping stones by the shore, and being together with family and friends, while enjoying good food, games and laughter.

Sandy was at his best while serving others. In Virginia he volunteered at the church food pantry, transported people to medical appointments, visited shut-ins, worked with the local hospice and journeyed to the hurricane torn south with Habitat. He also worked with family owners at Charley’s restaurant in Lynchburg, where staff and patrons enjoyed his easy manner. When he returned to New Hampshire, he would be named Volunteer of the Year award for Families in Transition and worked for Rockingham County Meals on Wheels (through the Portsmouth Senior Activity Center.)

He leaves his daughters, Kerry McCann Kenney (Tim) of Portsmouth and Courtney McCann Mosley (Kimp) of Lynchburg, VA, as well as grandchildren Samuel (Loralise), Jake, Josh, Harmony, Miles and Daveon along with great grand-girls, Timarie and Piper. Sandy also leaves his brother Kenneth McCann and a sister, Jill Fletcher.

Sandy’s journey through memory loss did not diminish his sweetness or desire to help others, nor his love of the garden. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Webster at Rye, and the team at Beacon Hospice for their compassionate care. A private remembrance is planned, and he will be committed to the sea near the Isle of Shoals in the springtime, per his wishes. In his own hand we find these words,” My key traits that marked my life, were to love honestly and be truthful at all costs.”

In keeping with his life of service, donations in his name should be made to a charity of choice or to: Webster at Rye, Employee Assistance Fund, 795 Washington Rd., Rye, NH, 03870.
