Saroj A. Chitnis

Saroj Anant Chitnis, wife of Anant Bhalchandra Chitnis and mother of Pravin and Praful, passed away peacefully due to old age on the morning of Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at home in Cambridge, MA surrounded by her entire family.

Saroj was born on October 7, 1933 in Nagpur, India. Her father, Dattatraya Gadakari was a distinguished lawyer and her mother Indira was homemaker. She was the third child of six siblings.  

Saroj and Anant were married on December 29, 1961 in a simple ceremony in Shegaon in India.

Saroj lost both her parents at a young age of 17 and became primary caregiver for her siblings. Despite many hardships, and in an era when girls were not expected to study or work, she continued her education and completed her bachelor’s degree from Nagpur University in 1954 followed by a Law degree from University of Jabalpur in 1961; while working most of the time. 

After completing her education, she joined the State of Madhya Pradesh service in the Registration department (Registry of Deeds) and retired in 1991 as District Registrar (Register of Deeds), the highest position at the district level (County equivalent). After retiring, she spent most of her time in Nagpur while visiting US and Canada multiple times to meet her grandchildren.

She organized and was active in social events for many Maharastrian festivals. She also helped many of her friends, neighbors, and others throughout her life. She was very independent, strong, and a trailblazer for her time.  She valued education from a very young age and despite losing her parents, obtained her law degree. 

Saroj is survived by her husband Anant; her sons, Pravin and Praful; grandchildren, Devdoot and Anagha; sister Pramodini; and  many loving nephews, nieces, and friends. 

Saroj is predeceased by her parents Dattatraya and Indira, and her brothers, Krishnakumar, Radharaman, Amritanand, and Shirish.

The funeral services will be performed at The Cremation Society of New Hampshire, 243 Hanover St, Manchester, NH on Friday Sept 29, 2023 from 10 AM - 12 Noon.
