Scott Dustin Smith

Scott Dustin Smith, 66, died peacefully in his home on September 9th, 2024, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in Nashua, New Hampshire on December 9, 1957 to parents Harold and Hazel Smith, of Hudson, NH.

Scott is survived by his wife of 40 years, Linda Smith of Milford, NH, his daughter Jennifer Doucette, and son-in-law Jimmy, of Hopkinton, NH, as well as two stepdaughters, Sue Ann White of Virginia Beach, VA, and Heidi Cloutier and son-in-law Mark Kennedy of Amherst, NH. In addition to his eight cherished grandchildren, he leaves behind many siblings: sister Judy Rayno and husband Arlo, brother Frank Smith and partner Diane Burdick, brother Eric Smith and wife Sheila, brother Dana Smith and partner Linda Smith, brother Terrence Smith and wife Shauna, sister Bette Smith, brother Marc Smith and wife Tammy, and sister Heidi Smith. He was predeceased by his parents Harold and Hazel Smith, and sister Kathy Palermo.

The seventh of ten children, Scott was known for raising Cain with his siblings in between the daily work of running their family farm. He was the strong and silent type, and fought his cancer with an unrelenting fierceness and stubbornness that made it seem impossible to truly lose him.

Scott drank copious amounts of coffee, played in a bowling league for most of his life, was forever starting a new home improvement project and had a soft spot for all animals. He spent a fortune on lottery tickets over the years, believing he would “make it big” one day. While he never did win the megabucks, he did make it big as evidenced by his lasting legacy of conservation and stewardship and the countless family and friends who are better for his influence and will miss him deeply. He had a heart of gold and was well-known for his generous spirit and willingness to help those around him.

Following an honorable discharge from the Marines, he worked for 12 years installing garage doors, then at H & M Metals for over 20 years working as a welder and moving into a supervisor role at the sheet metal fabrication company, manufacturing parts for robotics, electronic and aerospace industries. He volunteered inspecting yards and homes prior to dog adoptions and as an EMT and Medic with the Amherst Rescue for 18 years taking on roles as both Captain and Chief over the years. Scott retired from the NH Department of Corrections after 14 years of service in 2018. In his retirement, he enjoyed time with his grandchildren, helping others with various projects, and traveling with his wife. Through his final days, he was known for cracking jokes, spoiling his overweight beagle Snoopy, and flirting with his oncology team.
