Dr. S. Narasimhan peacefully passed away on September 20, 2021. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was 85 years old. Sim, as he was known to many people, was Professor Emeritus at the College of Business at the University of Rhode Island. He was born in Mohanur, India and raised in Kalappanaicken Patti, India. Sim’s father was a merchant and his mother was a homemaker. He had five siblings.
Sim earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from P.S.G. College of Technology in Coimbatore, India. He taught at Nachimuthu Polytechnic, Pollachi, India and then came to the United States in 1962. Sim had a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Tennessee. Sim received his PhD in Industrial and Mechanical Engineering from the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.
Sim worked for Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan where he was one of the engineers that worked on designing the iconic 1965 Ford Mustang. He was married to his wife in 1967. From 1967 to 1972, Sim worked for Western Electric in Columbus, Ohio. In 1973, Sim worked for AT&T Bell Labs in Princeton, New Jersey, and in 1975, he worked for NCR in Miamisburg, Ohio. In 1976, he taught at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina and at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1979, Sim moved the family to Kingston, RI. For 30 years, Sim served as a professor at the College of Business at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, RI. He taught Operations Management and Supply Chain Management at the Business School of the University of Rhode Island.
Sim published numerous articles in highly regarded academic journals, and he wrote one of the main textbooks in the field of Production Planning and Inventory Control. He served as a mentor for many professors and students. Sim established an Endowment in 2012 which provides need-based scholarships for students in the College of Business majoring in Supply Chain Management, students in the College of Environment and Life Sciences majoring in Biological Sciences and students in the Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Education and Professional Studies.
As for his hobbies, Sim was a jogger and a tennis player. He loved sports and to watch football, basketball, tennis, golf and baseball. He was an avid bridge player. He liked reading and listening to music. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and classmates.
Sim is survived by his wife of 54 years, his daughter and son, his three grandchildren and his brother.
