September E. Flanagan (nee Marks) peaced out of this plane of existence on April 17, 2024. Born in Manhattan to Mimi and Arthur Marks, she spent her formative years in Brooklyn, NY, Randolph, VT, and Warner, NH. As a child of the 1960s and 70s she embraced the adventurous spirit and freedom of those times.
After graduating from Bishop Brady High School in 1979, September spent time in MA before returning to Concord, NH. She worked in the insurance field for several years, advocating for and implementing fair claims practices to benefit customers.
Her proudest accomplishment was being a mother to her children, Jessica and Matthew, making it her mission to gently guide or, as needed, drag them kicking and screaming through the mall parking lot of life’s lessons. She had a keen intellect, welcomed lively debate, and believed in “telling it like it is” – through her boldness she taught her children that having opinions and the words to express them matter. She was a voracious reader and appreciated all forms of literature, from the fictional works of Stephen King and Ken Follet to the teachings of the Dalai Lama; through her love of reading, she shared the ability of books to open one’s mind to endless realms of possibility. Her inquisitive nature led her to independently research various topics, from medieval Scottish history to the natural wonder of Mt. Everest; through her pursuit of knowledge, she taught her kids that the unexamined life is not worth living. She enjoyed helping plants grow, respected the power of art, and encouraged her children to embrace the beauty of the world around them. She loved to sing loudly, even though every song sounded like Better Man by Pearl Jam – as an unabashedly unique singer, she instilled in her children the courage to pursue their passions and to make their voices heard. She was a fierce protector of her siblings and staunchly loyal to her close circle of friends, instilling in her children the importance of family and value of true friendship.
In addition to her children, September leaves behind her granddaughter Alice Jordan, who was the light of her life. She is also survived by her motley crew of siblings: Christine Witham, Michael Pinkerton, Gwynith Frueauf and her husband Chris, and Elsa Pinkerton, as well as her son-in-law Scoot Jordan. September was pre-deceased by her parents and stepfather Arthur Pinkerton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the adult leukemia area of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in memory of September Flanagan to support cancer research and patient care at: Dana-Farber Cancer Institute P.O. Box 849168 Boston, MA 02284 or via dana-farber.org/gift.
We will miss your humor, sense of wonder, and bravery, Seppi Flan. The world is a much more colorful place because you were in it.
