DURHAM -- Sheila A. Mackie, 79, died October 15, 2010 at her daughter's home where she had resided for several years. The daughter of Dr. Adolph and Miriam (Watson) Eckstein, she was born in Providence, RI, graduating from The Wheeler School and Brown University, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
She was predeceased by her husband of fifty years, Albert W. Mackie, in 2001. They moved to New Hampshire in 1956, residing in Meredith, Durham and Concord.
Sheila was active in the management of the family business and enjoyed reading, genealogy, gardening and knitting. She was a woman of great love, strength and courage who overcame blindness from a young age. She was a descendant of several Mayflower and Piscataqua immigrants, as well as Nicholas Cooke, Governor of RI during the Revolutionary War.
Survivors include her daughter, Janet Mackie (Sandy MacLean) of Durham; her sons Dr. Andrew Mackie of Los Gatos, CA, Dr. Kenneth Mackie (Dr. Yvonne Lai) of Bloomington, IN and Jonathan (Sue) Mackie of Meredith, NH; her grandchildren, Michelle and Ian Mackie, and Emerson and Isabelle MacLean. She is survived by her sister, Meredith Sharpe and brother, Adolph (Bill) Eckstein, both of Providence, RI and nephew Adolph Eckstein III. She was predeceased by her son James Mackie, niece Abigail Sharpe, and her brother Theodore Eckstein.
A memorial service at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Durham will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society, PO Box 341461, Bethesda, MD 20827.
