Shirley E. Corning, 87, formerly of Hampton and a current resident of Portsmouth, died June 20, 2003, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Nashua. The widow of Alfred H. Corning, Sr., a lifelong Seacoast resident. Mrs. Corning was born on September 15, 1915, in East Kingston, NH the daughter of the late Robert and Geneva (Miles) Baldwin. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a Masters Degree in Languages. Mrs. Corning then spent the majority of her career as a bookkeeper. After retiring from Seaward Construction Company of Kittery, Maine Mrs. Corning continued working as a volunteer for many Seacoast area organizations. She assisted with the American Heart Association in Portsmouth, the Portsmouth High School Library, and Odiorne Point State Park. As a member of the Greenland Congregational Church, she assisted with their rummage and plant sales, as well as making items for their Christmas fairs, and helping out in the kitchen when there was a church supper. Mrs. Corning enjoyed crafting, reading and sewing in her spare time. Mrs. Corning kept her mind and body active by enjoying trips through the Elder Hostel as well as attending classes at UNH and taking writing courses in Portsmouth. In 1988 she visited extensively in Japan, enjoying learning of the culture firsthand. In 1996 she went to Scotland and England with the Elder Hostel. Many winters were enjoyed by Mrs. Corning touring the country visiting with her friends and family. She was well loved and will be sorely missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing her. Family members include; two sons, Albert Lloyd Young, Jr., Cocoa, FL and Carl J. Corning of Colfax, WA; two daughters, Phyllis E. Snow of Nashua and Terryann Munroe also of Nashua; one stepson, Alfred H. Corning, Jr., Sarasota, FL; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Association for the Blind, The Christian Appalachian Project, St. Joseph Hospital, Nashua, NH or the charity of your choice.Mrs. Corning will be interned at the Hampton Cemetery in a private ceremony. A future memorial service will be held for all of her many friends and family members. The time and date will be provided through her church and the local newspaper.
