Steven Allen Upson, 61, of Concord, passed away on November 29, 2023.
Steve was a chief engineer at Raytheon throughout his career. He worked on nuclear powerplants and the Patriot Missile System, gaining many patents during his tenure at Raytheon. Steve grew up in Amesbury, Massachusetts, but his heart was always in the mountains. Anyone who knew Steve can still hear his big belly laugh, which was infectious. He was a lover of ice cream, especially mint chocolate chip and moose tracks with jimmies.
Later in life, Steve spent most of his time in Nashua, New Hampshire and Maine. Steve lived hard and played hard; a long-time skier at Sunday River, Steve loved being out on the slopes and enjoying time with his friends up in the mountains or by Sebago Lake. After a near-fatal ski accident in 2011, Steve unfortunately never skied again. Steve struggled with chronic pain after this accident, resulting in an addiction to pain medication. He was ultimately able to overcome this addiction, but it had lasting health effects.
From a young age, Steve struggled with alcoholism, which ultimately took his life after nine years of debilitating and progressive alcohol-related brain damage, resulting in severe short-term memory loss and successive seizures. Steve never hit rock-bottom or sought out help, resulting in years of estrangement from his family and friends.
Predeceased by his father Stanley Upson, mother Rita (Senechal) Upson, and brother Stanley Upson Jr. Survived by his daughter Sarabeth Upson of Grand Junction, Colorado; sister Donna and her husband Wayne Lucier of Salem, NH; brother Rick Upson of Fort Worth, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
There are no services scheduled at this time.
