Steven L Hansen, 51, a lifetime resident of Merrimack passed away while sleeping on New Years Eve due to complications of a serious respiratory infection.
Steve spent his “growing up” years living with his family on Baboosic Lake. He loved water-skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing with his buddies, one of them later became his brother-in-law Chris Gower from across the lake.
One of Steve’s favorite pastimes while growing up was fishing. He would spend hours on the dock or in the boat trying to hook “the big one”. At the age of 12 he caught a 9.5lb 24-inch largemouth base. The old timers said that was probably the record for the lake. That fish is still proudly hanging on Steve’s wall.
Steve graduated from Merrimack High School Class of “93”. While there he played baseball and basketball. After graduation he played in many men’s leagues in the area.
Anyone who knew Steve knew that he was an avid sports fan, college and pros. At different times in his life, he coached MMS baseball and MMS girls’ basketball, but his greatest joy came from coaching, or when not coaching, watching his daughters play softball. He was such a proud Dad. His youngest daughter Savannah is a freshman on the Rivier College softball team, and he was anxiously awaiting the start of her season. His eldest daughter Tori is currently in the process of applying to graduate programs for a master’s in social work.
Throughout his life Steve worked at several large companies and had very good jobs but somehow, he never felt comfortable at them. Several years ago, he applied for a job as a paraeducator at Merrimack Middle School and immediately knew that this was where he wanted and needed to be. From the first day he was a positive role model, treating those in his care with dignity and respect.
Steve is survived by his parents, Bob and Donna Hansen, his daughters, Tori Tacito and Savannah Hansen, ex-wife Kristina whom he was married to for 20 years, brother-in-law and niece Chris and Lucy Gower, whole McLaurin clan from Amherst and Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, and Nephews, spread all over the country. He was predeceased by his sister Kristen in June of 2025.
Steve made lots of friends in his work life, coaching life and family life, but he has had a small circle of very good friends for most of his life including Sam and Troy Lyford, Sean Geelen and his cousin Erik.
Steve’s family cannot thank the entire MMS family enough for their overwhelming show of love and support.
We will never forget them.
A Celebration of Steve’s life will be held on January 24th from 1pm to 5pm at the American Legion Hall in Merrimack New Hampshire. Friends and family are welcome to stop by during the duration of this time.
