IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Susan
McMath
December 9, 1957 – January 25, 2026
Susan Reedy McMath, born December 9, 1957, in Manchester, Connecticut, passed away unexpectedly. She was the daughter of the late Garland and Beverly Reedy. Susan grew up in Coventry, Connecticut, alongside her older sister Janeen and brother Christopher, and attended the Coventry school system. She later made her home in Walden, Vermont, where she and her husband raised their daughters. From a young age, she loved the outdoors and adventure, traveling across the country multiple times with her family in a station wagon pulling a pop-up trailer—experiences that shaped her lifelong love of nature.
Her passion for flowers, gardens, and plants began early through her work at the gardens of the Nathan Hale Homestead Historical Site. This love of the natural world guided much of her early career, which included loon research in New Hampshire, work with the International Crane Foundation in Wisconsin, research at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Florida, and studies of Common Terns on Lake Michigan.
Susan attended Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where she earned a degree in Biology and met her future husband, David McMath. They were married on September 6, 1986, and would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year. Together, they built a life rooted in love, curiosity, nature, and family.
Together, they raised two daughters, Keilidh and Linnea. Susan was incredibly devoted to her family and found deep joy in being a mother and grandmother to her beloved grandchildren, Liam and Torrin. She especially treasured trips to Florida with her girls to visit her parents, creating memories filled with sunshine, togetherness, and laughter.
Susan loved the ocean, soaking up sunshine, and gardening—she was a Master Gardener with a lifelong love of flowers—and spending time with her family. On sunny afternoons in Vermont, she could almost always be found sitting in a lawn chair with a good book in hand, basking in the warmth of the sun. She adored her dog, Acer, and always shared her home with golden retrievers and many cats.
She was deeply artistic—an exceptionally talented quilter, a gifted photographer, and a lover of arts and crafts, including making handmade kites. One cherished memory is of Susan finishing a baby quilt while snuggling a cat, glowing in the afternoon sun. She took special joy in creating quilts for very dear friends and family and was always thrilled to gift them—each one made with care, intention, and love.
Susan had a deep appreciation for the small, everyday moments in life. She delighted in noticing simple things—a squirrel in a tree, a bird passing by, the way the light shifted in the afternoon—and could talk about them in the most thoughtful, detailed way. Those conversations, full of curiosity and warmth, made people feel present and connected.
She loved sailing on Lake Champlain, could talk to anyone, and told the most wonderfully detailed stories. Susan was generous, always putting others before herself, and had a rare gift for making everyone feel welcome. Her love, warmth, and selflessness were evident in every interaction, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Susan’s favorite joke was, “Why did the turkey cross the road? Because it was the chicken’s day off!”
She is survived by her husband, David McMath; her daughters, Keilidh McMath and Linnea Devine; son-in-law, Chuck Devine; her beloved grandchildren, Liam Devine and Torrin Devine; her brother, Christopher Reedy, and his wife, Susan Reedy, and their children, Laurel and Cole Reedy and their families; her sister, Janeen Adil, and her husband, Tom Adil, and their daughter, Rachael Adil.
Susan will be remembered through the things she loved most—birds, flowers, bright colors, sunshine, and the beach—and through the many lives she touched with kindness, creativity, and joy.
Arrangements: No formal services will be held at this time, with plans for a summer celebration of Susan’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Central Vermont Humane Society or the Vermont Audubon Society, in honor of Susan’s deep love of birds, animals, and the natural world.
Assisting the family with arrangements is the Cremation Society of NH, Littleton. To view Susan's Online Tribute, send condolences to the family, or for more information, visit https://csnh.com.
