Susanne A. Foote

Susanne Andrews Foote of New London, known to friends and family as Danna, died in Lebanon on March 5 at 72. Drawing on the resources of a strong family and education at Hannah More Academy in Reisterstown, MD and at Wellesley College with her class of 1951, she held high standards of literacy, compassion, loyalty, good humor and sheer character. She loved gardening and playing tennis with her friends in Darien, CT, in Venice and Englewood Florida, then in New London, NH where the family moved eight years ago. The life of the mind was always in her sights, and she worked diligently for Adventures In Learning, the Adult Education branch of Colby Sawyer College. She was also active in the New London Garden Club, serving briefly before her death as the Club's Horticulturist. Before moving to NH, Mr. and Mrs. Foote lived in Pound Ridge, NY for ten years, and before that in Darien CT for thirty years where they raised their family. They are long time members of the Noroton Yacht Club in Darien. Mrs. Foote was active in the Democratic Party in Darien, serving as Vice Chairman. While their sons John and Jim were attending Dartmouth Mrs. Foote worked for the architectural firm of Hoberman and Gallagher in Greenwich, CT. She is survived by her husband, Robert S. Foote of New London, NH, her older son John S. Foote and his wife Mary Clare Foote and three grand daughters Laura, Julie, and Allison of South Salem, NY. Her brother Alexander S. Andrews lives with his wife Lynne in Santa Fe, NM. Her nephew Randall C. Coleman III lives with his wife Edna and family in Houston, TX and on Squam Lake, NH. Her niece Chappell Walendziak lives with her husband in New Milford, CT. Her surviving family also includes her cousins Janet Williams of Sharon, CT and Adelaide Rackeman of Baltimore, MD. Mrs. Foote was predeceased by her younger son James Andrews Foote, by her older sister June Andrews Coleman, and by her nephew Terry Andrews. The family plans a memorial gathering with friends at home in New London this spring as Danna's garden begins to flower. Donations may be made in her memory to the Community Garden at Tracy Library, PO Box 1919, New London, NH 03257; or to the James A. Foote '80 Memorial Scholarship Fund at Dartmouth College, Donor Relations, 6066 Development Office, Hanover, NH 03755. Burial will be at the family's convenience in the family plot at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien, CT. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.
