Sylvia Grauer Glenn was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1921 to Samuel Wolff Grauer and Ida Farber Grauer. Her family endured hard times during the Depression, but she was a talented student and started college at the Cooper Union. Sylvia obtained a BA in fine arts from Brooklyn College, then worked as a draftsperson and layout artist for magazines, including Life.
She was in college when she began dating her husband, Jules Glenn, who later went to medical school and became a psychoanalyst, although they had first met in fourth grade. Over the years she painted in oils, watercolor, and sumi ink, and did photography as well, especially on world travels with Jules. The couple raised four children, moving to Queens before settling in Great Neck, NY, where Sylvia enjoyed gardening. Family and friends were always welcome in her house, which had a lively and creative atmosphere. When her children were teenagers, she earned an MA in anthropology from NYU; her thesis was on macaque twin monkeys, and she later worked part-time on a study of human twins. Sylvia also wrote a novella, The Twisted Tree. In 2005, she and her husband moved to a retirement community in Nashua, NH.
She died on March 31, 2020, of COVID-19. She will be missed by her children, Russell, Mel, Laura, and Janet Glenn, and their partners, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
