Terry Stephen Whitmarsh walked straight through heaven’s gates at age 69, surely greeted by his mother, father, and sister (Juanita Crossett) who were awaiting his arrival. He passed away in Manchester, New Hampshire with his daughter at his side.
Terry was brought into the world on March 27, 1955, to parents Gerald and Anna Whitmarsh (McCoy) in the rural Penn-York Valley. The last born and only boy, he had three older sisters to help guide him through childhood in small-town Waverly, NY where he attended and graduated from high school.
A man of many talents and interests, Terry lived 100 lifetimes all in one. From the unbelievable, once-in-a-lifetime experiences to the more subdued, self-reflecting hobbies – he did it all. His stories were always ones that grab your attention and make you hang on every word. He could have been found meeting and playing guitar with legendary musicians, racing stock cars with well-known drivers, hunting and fishing alone with is thoughts or with his children – which was probably less-than-peaceful, and spending time with his family- even after exhausting, manual-labor work shifts in factories and plants – he always made the time.
Cherishing his Native American heritage, Terry found true love and solace in nature – carrying out his dream of living on top of a mountain in a log cabin, nestled in the middle of the trees, creeks, and clear blue skies – twice – once in Spencer, NY and again in Clarksville, GA.
Terry is survived by his children, Trisha Dawe (Whitmarsh) and her husband, Timothy Dawe, Todd Whitmarsh and his former daughter-in-law Paula Whitmarsh; step-children Rachel Newhart and Erick Newhart; his grandchildren: Laney Dawe, Jackson Dawe, and Jonathan Dawe; his sisters: Dawn Vanderpool (Whitmarsh) and Jean Lattimer (Whitmarsh), his former spouses: Collette Whitmarsh (Carnrike) and Melanie Whitmarsh (Newhart), his nieces/nephews: Bridgett Gratkowski (Vanderpool), Michelle Bruer (Vanderpool), Penny Hibbard (Crossett), and Shane Lattimer, and many great-nieces/nephews.
No formal services will be held, as per Terry’s request. Instead, he wished for his ashes to be scattered on a mountain peak so he can finally be one with nature – and the peace and beauty surrounding it. Assisting the family with arrangements is the Cremation Society of NH, Manchester.
Please sign the Guestbook below and leave your fondest memory of Terry so that – even though his family is scattered throughout the country, all can come together to remember him fondly.
In lieu of flowers or donations to memorialize Terry, consider committing to spend more quality time with your loved ones and maybe tell a story about him every now and then over dinner - even if it IS the seafood salad at Golden Corral – he “loved that stuff.”
It’s incredible to think that a culmination of events, experiences, and love make a man who he is at the moment of death. It’s never “too little” to reconnect with loved ones and it’s never “too late” to rekindle relationships. In the end, love is the only thing that matters – and when you have it… don’t let it go.
