Warren “Bud” Ames III, 65, of Bath, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully at home on October 13, 2023.
Bud was born in Concord, MA, in 1958 to Marilyn Ames (Taylor) and Warren Ames Jr. Bud graduated from Hollis Brookline High School in 1976. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from the University of New Hampshire in 1980.
Bud was active in 4-H growing up, showing Romney sheep and was the youngest board member for the American Romney Breeders Association. While at university he played intramural hockey and lived in the International Dorm on the UNH campus where he met his wife Mary Ames (McIntyre) of Deerfield, NH. After graduating university he participated in the International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) as a delegate to New Zealand from 1980–1981, living and working on dairy, hog, and sheep farms. Upon his return to the states, he proposed to Mary and they were married in Deerfield in 1981. Bud and Mary have two children, Seth Ames and Sarah Deuell (Ames).
Bud started working in high school for his grandfather, William F. Taylor, at Twin State Sand and Gravel and Blaktop, of West Lebanon, NH. He worked his way up from pushing a wheelbarrow on a paving crew to CFO and owner. Bud operated Twin State Sand and Gravel and Blaktop with his longtime business partner and best friend, Stuart Close, before retiring in 2023.
Bud was a farmer at heart. In Lebanon, NH, he had a hilltop farm for 30 years, where the family raised Romney sheep, Hereford cattle, and made maple syrup. When the kids got tired of chasing their dad’s sheep, Bud got into working border collies, starting with his first dog Sam. Bud loved the world of competitive sheepdog trialing, and traveled throughout the northeast and Canada to attend trials. He was a lifetime member of the North East Border Collie Association (NEBCA) and hosted sheep dog trials every year at the farm. Bud was active in supporting his kids in 4-H, Seth’s Herefords, and Sarah’s natural-colored Romneys. After the kids left for college, Bud and Mary sold their beloved farm in Lebanon and moved to a farm in Bath, NH, where they switched to raising Katahdin Hair sheep and continued to host yearly sheep dog trials along the Ammonoosuc river.
Bud was a lifelong Christian Scientist. He was a member of the Mother Church and served the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Hanover, New Hampshire as First Reader, Sunday School teacher, and Sunday School Superintendent.
Bud was a big dreamer which helped expand and grow the family business. He loved to travel the world whenever he could. He had a magnetic personality, a loud laugh, a wicked sense of humor, and a love for life and adventure. He loved his livestock and dogs, and was a compassionate farmer and steward, taking the best care of his land and sheep, bringing weak lambs into the house in the winter. He loved to hike, snowshoe, alpine and cross-country ski. He was quick to help those in need and was a loving brother to his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Mitchell (Ames).
Bud is predeceased by his father Warren, and survived by his mother Marilyn, sister Betty, wife Mary, and two children, Seth and Sarah.
