KINGSTON, NH - Wayne A. Leighton passed away on July 9, 2012 following a brief illness. Wayne was born April 27, 1946 in Lawrence, MA, the youngest child of Herbert and Norma Leighton. He graduated from North Andover High School. Wayne leaves his beloved wife, Maria Leighton of Kingston, his sisters Joan and Jane, several nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
At age 10, Wayne became a horse groomer servicing the horses of the local elite. He was an avid horseman playing polo at the Myopia Hunt Club and enjoyed backcountry riding with the Green Mountain Horseman's Association. Wayne started his automotive career at Ryan Motors, Haverhill, MA, eventually expanding his skills to own and operate Engine Service Company from 1971 to 2003. Most recently he was employed by TransGas as an LNG tanker driver and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 170.
Wayne was a world traveler having visited many continents from snowmobiling in Iceland, touring the bush and tropics of Australia, camping in Alaska, British Columbia and Nova Scotia to traveling all through Europe. He has snowmobiled all through the western United States and had a great love for being outdoors. He enjoyed Airedale dogs, whitewater rafting, polo, kayaking, camping (even in the winter), fishing, boating, riding his 4 wheelers deep in the woods, motorcycling, dirt biking, dune buggies and was an avid NASCAR fan. He was particularly fond of fast boats and fast cars.
He was one of the founders of the New England Super Modified Association in 1963. He formerly owned and designed several super modified racing cars in the 1960's and 1970's. He served for many years on the Whittier Vo-Tech Advisory Board assisting students interested in automotive careers. He was a life member of the Crescent Yacht Club of Bradford, MA, member of the Country Pond Fish and Game Club and their Pistol League, earning many trophies as an expert marksman.
ARRANGEMENTS: There are no funeral services. Internment will be at sea. Memorial contributions may be made in Wayne's name to: Crescent Yacht Club Maritime Scholarship Fund c/o Crescent Yacht Club, P. O. Box 5006, Bradford, MA 01835.
