William "Honky Tonk" Tonks of Concord, NH passed away peacefully on December 23, 2016 almost a week after celebrating his 93rd birthday.
William was born in Wakefield, MA on December 17, 1923 to Alfred Tonks and Marion (Morrison) Tonks
He served as an electrician in the Navy, and was also in the Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. He started out working in his parents' diner and worked in a few others around NH later on in life. He held many various jobs over the years but his career was in Carpentry. He grew up in Wakefield, MA and later moved to Bradford, NH. He would often reminisce of his times of living in Boulder, CO and Seattle, WA.
He was a self-proclaimed "punster and a wit." Honky Tonk enjoyed entertaining people one on one with his rhymes and limericks, some of which he would describe (with a wink) as "Risqué." He enjoyed hanging out with the fellas AKA "The Bobs" and spending time at his favorite clubs in Concord, NH, the American Legion Post 21 and the VFW Post 1631. Crosswords and reading were his favorite things to do to pass the time in order to keep his mind sharp.
Honky Tonk leaves behind a daughter, Jennifer Strong of Concord, NH; a sister, Gloria Thornell of North Carolina; grandson, Jacob Finan of Bow, NH; and many cousins, nieces and nephews in RI and MA. He was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond Tonks and Kenneth Tonks.
A graveside committal service with military honors will be held Friday, January 13th at 2pm at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery 110 Daniel Webster Highway in Boscawen, NH. He was very fond of all animals so we ask in lieu of flowers that you please instead make a donation in his name to the Pope Memorial SPCA 94 Silk Farm Rd, Concord, NH 03301. The Cremation Society of NH is assisting the family with arrangements. To view an online memorial or leave a message of condolence, please go to www.csnh.com
